Job Description

What does an intern do?

Interns work directly for a Colorado State Senator. They have the opportunity to research policy issues, draft letters to constituents, write tributes and press releases, attend committee hearings and legislative sessions, as well as get firsthand experience of the legislative process. Interns work closely with senators, senate staff, aides and other interns.

What are the qualifications to be an intern?

Must be a registered Republican (or third party)

• Strong interest in politics

Commit to coming in at least two days a week

Must pass a background check

How long does session last?

The Legislative Session lasts 120 days beginning on January 9, 2013. The Senate convenes at 10:00 a.m. on Mondays and 9:00 a.m. the rest of the week.

When would I start my internship?

Most interns start the week after session begins and stay until the end of April or beginning of May. Our office understands that your schedules can sometimes be hectic, but we ask that you do your best to honor your commitment. We understand that spring break is a time off for students.

Is this a paid internship?

Interns are not paid, but most, if not all, receive class credit for their time at the capitol. Interns typically work between 10-15 hours a week, depending on their schedule and school requirements. This position can lead to a paid internship over the summer months.

What is the dress code?

The dress code for everyone at the capitol during session is business attire. Men must wear a coat and tie; ladies may not wear anything sleeveless.
